American Attack on Caracas Stokes Concerns of Potential Greenland Acquisition.

Recent US-led bombardment in Venezuela and the detention of its leader have ignited worry regarding Washington's ambitions on the Arctic territory. Members of the former president's political movement have reportedly set their sights on the resource-rich landmass in the wake of the events in South America.

Inflammatory Messages and Official Outrage

Merely a short time following the initiation of the Caracas campaign, a well-known conservative podcaster, who is married to a high-ranking presidential adviser, shared a suggestive map. The picture depicted Greenland covered in the American flag, accompanied by single-word message: "SOON."

This blatant threat to claim the mineral-rich land, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, provoked immediate and firm criticism from Denmark's officials.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should continue to cooperate as such. American security is also the Arctic's and Denmark’s security," stated the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States collaborate to ensure security in the North."

The diplomat additionally highlighted that Denmark had substantially boosted its military budget this year, allocating a substantial sum specifically for Arctic and North Atlantic security. "And yes, we expect full recognition for the sovereign borders of the Kingdom of Denmark," he added.

Political Appointments and Geopolitical Goals

The situation were further exacerbated by the recent naming of a Southern governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The appointee had publicly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "honour" to work in a volunteer capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

Following the events in Venezuela, this envoy commended the administration's actions, linking it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since assuming office, the US president has repeatedly unnerved transatlantic partners with his stated desire in Greenland. The territory is considered critically important for national security and potential resource extraction. It currently hosts the most northerly US military base.

Refusing to Rule Out Military Action

In a significant media appearance, the leader refused to exclude the use of armed action to acquire Greenland. This position comes amid intensifying great-power competition in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Friction and Indigenous Resistance

In reaction to this constant "rhetoric" of intent, Danish security agency took the unprecedented step last month of classifying the United States as a "potential threat."

The leaders of Denmark and Greenland delivered a unified and forceful statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland reveals a nuanced sentiment. While a vast majority of the territory's residents desire independence from Denmark, there is simultaneously scant appetite to join the United States. The island has had the legal right to declare sovereignty for over a decade.

Expert Assessment: A Credible Scenario?

Military experts are increasingly reconsidering the possibility of such a move. One policy analyst focusing in military analysis conceded she had once dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a couple hundred or a couple thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's not clear to me which power could do anything about it," she observed.
