European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.

  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
