Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
