Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any prominent honors show approaches, one notices an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
