This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the concept of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
