Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the right to contest certain rulings from the official, following the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
